Pedro I of Brazil was crowned Emperor of Brazil in 1822. He became the founder and first ruler of the Empire of Brazil that spanned territories that form modern Brazil and Uruguay. For almost two months in 1826 he was also King of Portugal and the Algarves, although abdicated in favour of his eldest daughter, Maria II. His rule of Brazil was plagued by war, the Emperor’s sexual affair with a courtier and difficulties in the Brazilian parliament over whether the emperor or government held sovereignty led Pedro I to abdicate in 1831, and he was succeeded by his son Pedro II.
